Websites are key in marketing your business. That’s why, apart from branding, website design has become one of the key services we offer. Here we’ll run through the steps of a typical website design and development process and how to prepare from a client perspective. When it comes to website design and development, our process includes 4 phases: Research, Plan, Design, and Build.
Phase 1: Research
To effectively design a website you need to understand the business; it’s challenges, target market and customer. The research phase includes an initial assessment of the current situation, company background, competitors, requirements and goals for the website. It also includes discussions regarding user experience considerations, site functionalities, page structure and content.
Phase 2: Plan
Once all relevant information has been collated and the research and review has been undertaken, the planning phase starts. This is when we plan the structure and navigation of the website. A sitemap flow chart of the pages and sub-pages maps out the website architecture. Content strategy and assessment of text and image assets are finalized. The planning phase is a very important step in developing a website. It is the backbone of website, therefore it is important to define this before moving on to the design phase.
Phase 3: Design
By this phase you should have a clear idea of what each page needs to entail. The first step is to design the wireframes. A wireframe is a simple graphic layout outlining what goes where, and defining sections of importance. The visual design of the home page is then developed, followed by all other template pages.
Phase 4: Build
This is where we convert the visual design to a functional website. The website is carefully coded, starting with the home page, followed by all other pages, optimized for responsive layout. All content is integrated; text and image assets are saved for web and organized for development. Once the full site has been developed, the website is tested and fine-tuned for launch, ready to go live.
All websites need regular maintenance to keep safe and running smoothly, including updates, upgrades and backups. Building a website is a big investment, and as it will be an significant asset to your business, it’s important to work with the right design team to look after your website. Not only from a brand consistency point of view, but also to keep the website safe and up-to-date.
